Worm Composting

Early Saturday morning, November 22, 2014, a small group arrived to Mālama Learning Centerʻs classroom, ready and enthusiastic to learn about worm composting!

We learned about the anatomy of a worm... which helps us to take care of our worms... which helps us have happy worms... which can eat HALF their body weight DAILY!!

What a GREAT way to divert food scraps from the land fill... AND make amazing, healthy, natural fertilizer for your garden!

As of today, we have 10 more worm bins in this world... not bad for a Saturday!!

Mahalo to Hawaiian Electric for making this workshop possible and mahalo to all the participants who worked hard... and are now caring for a their own worms.

Pin Loom Weaving

Do you have a drawer half full of t-shirts you never wear?

On September 13, 2014, a small group gathered at Mālama Learning Center to learn the magic of transforming an old t-shirt into a single strand of yarn. We then learned to take that yarn and weave it into a square piece on a simple pin loom that could be used for a pot holder, a trivet, sewn together to make a place mat, glasses case... the possibilities are endless!

Mahalo nui to our workshop participant friends for a morning of laughter, weaving and brainstorming different uses for our t-shirt yarn and pin loom squares.

Lā'au Lapa'au Workshop

We enjoyed a day of learning and sharing at our Lā'au Lapa'au Workshop on Saturday January 25, 2014.  We discussed various plants that can be used to help heal our bodies and were energized by a homebrew remedy created with aloe, 'ōlena, and some chili peppers.  Mahalo nui to Cody and all of our workshop participants for being open to the physical and spiritual healing powers that nature provides us!

On Saturday December 7, 2013, we learned about all of the natural materials readily available around us that can be repurposed to create beautiful holiday decorations!  Teacher, Malia Lagaso surely inspired us to get creative in this hands-on workshop.  Everyone enjoyed using their imagination to craft amazing ornaments, garlands, bouquets, and more!  Mahalo to Malia and the Pacific Links Hawai'i Foundation for making this workshop possible.

Gyotaku Workshop

On November 9, 2013, active fisherman and marine scientist Nakoa Goo led us in a workshop on Gyotaku!  Before starting our fish prints, Nakoa shared his knowledge about Hawai'i's nearshore reef ecosystems including the conservation of nearshore fisheries resources in Hawai'i and the anatomy and biology of native reef fish species.  This way, we could really understand and appreciate the vast ocean that surrounds us as well as this beautiful art form.  After a quick demo, we spent the rest of the time printing on paper, t-shirts, bags, dish towels, and other materials using real fish.  Mahalo nui to Nakoa for providing us an engaging and hands-on experience!
